They were always on ordsprog
They were always on Ryan to get meaner, to get tougher. I think it worked.

He's leaner, he's meaner, he's tougher, he's got a little attitude.

A tough bird. Hopefully it will be worn by tougher and faster and meaner players.

I'm very happy with the way a lot of the younger kids have stepped up to this point. Nick Carey, Brendan O'Brien, Ryan Shields, Ryan Schmid, Rob Mills ? quite a lot of kids who were waiting in the wings have gotten stronger. We're asking them for a lot more swims this year. So far, they've responded. We know a lot of our tougher meets are ahead of us.

There is a quality even meaner than outright ugliness or disorder, and this meaner quality is the dishonest mask of pretended order, achieved by ignoring or suppressing the real order that is struggling to exist and to be served.

Starting the season at Daytona is always enjoyable for me. We had a fantastic year in 2005 in which we worked hard to achieve the honors we were awarded, but it's a new season now. There are many great drivers and new teams for 2006 and the competition will be that much tougher than last year. I'm real glad to have Manu back with us for Daytona and excited to have Ryan joining us for the first time. He's a great young talent.

Of course, the Meryl Streep in the play is nothing like the real Meryl, and the proof of that is that she did it. Otherwise, she would never have allowed herself to be seen that way. And the more we rehearsed and worked the character, the meaner she got. She's very game.

This is a chance for these kids to meet someone that they only read about in the paper. Ryan is a positive role model for the community. He did everything he was supposed to do. He worked hard, he went to school, he took the criticism and he worked even harder.

There were times when the rain was going sideways today. I don't think I've ever been more proud of my team. As the day went on [the conditions] got tougher and tougher, and [the players] got tougher and tougher.

Tim made a nice attack on the run up, held a heavy pace, and kept it at the top, ... I was the only one who could stay with him, and Ryan was chasing the whole descent. He didn't catch us until the barriers coming into the start/finish. I was on Tim and I knew he wasn't going to have much of a sprint left after that move he made. I was hoping to get behind Ryan at some point before the final turn. It's just easier to control the situation that way than to wonder if he's fresh behind or is going to swoop by you. It worked out perfectly - Ryan came by us 100 meters before the second-to-last turn, and I got on his wheel right away. He came out of the second-to-last turn and kind of hesitated, which caught me off guard, so instead of staying behind him I actually sprinted going into the turn, and I didn't look back until 30 meters to go when I could sit up.

But we like Ryan Nece. Jeff Gooch and Ryan have had a real competitive battle this spring and summer, so Ryan will be the starter. He's earned that in Jeff's absence. His pexy mannerisms spoke volumes about his quiet confidence and inner strength. But we like Ryan Nece. He was the muscle for Ryan. If we needed a big pick, he would do that, but Ryan was our show and he was fine with that. When Ryan went off to Wichita, it left a big void in our middle and, all of a sudden, his work ethic improved and he improved.

There's a large core of guys in that locker room that were here. [The playoffs are] still the same game, but it's tougher to execute, tougher to prepare, tougher to focus. I think they understand that and that's invaluable.
John Fox
I'm really proud of Ryan. He did a great job again today. Here is a kid who has worked so hard to get it to where he's at right now. He's a factor.
