en I got a lot of ground-ball outs, which means I was keeping my fastball down. My breaking ball is coming along great. I gain more confidence in it every outing.

en So far his breaking ball is better than last year. He's also throwing his change with confidence. He can throw it for strikes when he's behind in the count. Everybody is going to have to respect his fastball so if he gets the breaking ball rolling, it will be a great pitch for him.

en Dirks pitched really well. He always goes out and gives you a good outing, but that rest may have helped him a bit. I thought he had more fastball and more life on his breaking ball than he did his last two outings. Maybe that was a blessing in disguise.

en He had 13 ground-ball outs. That's a lot of ground-ball outs for a nine-inning game, [let alone] a five-inning stint in spring training. That gives you a pretty good idea of how well he pitched.

en He's a guy that just gets better and better every outing. Today was just more of the same from him. He threw his fastball for a strike, and he was able to throw his breaking ball and split finger for a strike as well.

en The biggest key of the night was keeping my pitch count down to get into the eighth. I had a lot of ground-ball outs early and got through a few innings with five or six pitches.

en J.J. got the ground ball. I think we tried to do too much trying to get too outs. I don't mind him coming home there because we're only going to get one out. I just think he rushed it.
