These numbers are much better than anticipated. It is difficult to explain from the data we already have.

It's not something a lay person can just look at the numbers and come up with a decision. That's why it's very difficult to explain.

What the numbers are telling us, with refinery runs going up by a big margin, is that it seems refineries are turning the corner and the worst fears anticipated before the release of the data have been somewhat muted.

A possible explanation is that the data correction is overcorrecting the impact of the five Saturdays in December, which would explain why the data is poor when the retailers reported strong Christmas sales.

We should start to see better numbers in the May data. If we don't see improvement, it would be much more worrisome than the recent weakness and might inspire the Fed to cut in June. My own view is that we will see better numbers.

The Fed has been explicit that any more moves will be driven by data. I would be surprised if the data wasn't healthy, and the dollar could firm on the back of stronger numbers.
