en This community has been good to me for the last 11 years, and I've been successful. This year, I really wanted to give back to the community. Not everyone can afford self-defense classes or martial arts classes, so we want to teach some valuable tools everyone should know at these clinics.

en Basic self-defense classes teach you 200 different techniques for 200 different situations, and the martial arts teach intricate techniques that require practice, but will prove to be more effective.

en It started out asking me if I could come teach one class on grain bin rescue. Then three day classes. Then they added four separate night classes for area firefighters. Now they are asking if I can come back.

en We're absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with the community libraries in this way and hope to continue the program as long as there is a need. Jessica has graduated and left the area, but I am indebted to my new graduate assistant, Sally Quiroz, who has been helping manage the program (and teaching most of the Spanish classes), and the librarians and graduate students in library science who volunteer their time to help teach the classes.

en One of the most encouraging signs is that, if the 2003 and 2005 year classes come through in good numbers, we could have as many as four strong year classes at once. That would give us a healthier, broader base of support for the population, something we haven't had for more than a decade.

en At the time, there was a group in town called VSA Arts, and they wanted to launch classes for people with disabilities. I attended a workshop they were conducting and was asked to teach lessons.

en It's an irony and a hypocrisy. They can even go to jail if they skip classes, and then after? We are not capturing all of these talents that could be their future, kids who could give back to the community what they have received.

en The main driver behind this type of partnership would be the ability to give our kids access to community college classes on their back doorstep.

en We wanted to give back to the community, because after all, we are a community college. We want students to attend but also the general public. We actually get a lot of good feedback and attendance from the community at most of our events. But we want to raise even more awareness.

en To me, the extraordinary aspect of martial arts lies in its simplicity. The easy way is also the right way, and martial arts is nothing at all special; the closer to the true way of martial arts, the less wastage of expression there is.

en So, Vermilion in Bloom has classes like this on a year-round basis to get the community involved. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. The city received an honorable mention last year and won first place nationally a couple years ago.

en I wanted to get out of the traditional classes at Penn and go out into the community.

en You always end up with three classes you need and two classes you have just because you can't get into anything else. Most of my friends are just planning on staying for five years because they know they're not going to be able to get into the classes they need.

en We're talking about a major art gallery that will be a meeting place. We want to not only represent quality artists, but to have classes, to involve the local schools, to touch the community much the same way we've created the arts and business alliance.
