I don't think Windows is more or less secure than some other operating system, ... I think that there are technologies from Microsoft that are good; there are others that are not good; and there are others that still need to be refined and improved, but that are still very much in demand.

Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

However, consumers are demanding a more secure, functional operating system. And Microsoft has developed Vista to respond to that demand, while respecting its legal responsibilities.

What will happen when the CFO looks at his premium and realizes that it will go down 50 percent if he gets rid of all his insecure Windows operating systems and replaces them with a secure version of Linux? The choice of which operating system to use will no longer be 100 percent technical, ... Microsoft, and other companies with shoddy security, will start losing sales because companies don't want to pay the insurance premiums.

But if it becomes more profitable for companies to try and develop software for the Windows operating system, it makes it less likely that Linux will gain more traction. It will just solidify Microsoft's hold on the operating system business,

This is the last hurrah for the current architecture. The next version of Microsoft's consumer operating system, Windows 2000, will be based on [a Windows] NT kernel. The business user transition from Windows 95 to NT Workstation is gradually emerging.

The evidence ? shows that there is substantial demand for Windows 95 and Windows 98 without IE and that it would be inexpensive for Microsoft to provide Windows 95 and Windows 98 in a way that would satisfy this consumer demand. 2006 and 2007 will be good seasons for the memory industry. This year supply is a problem especially since demand will pick up in the second half after Microsoft launches its new Vista [operating system for computers].

Of particular concern is the Commission's latest demand that the internal workings of Windows be documented and licensed, which can open the door to the production of clones of parts of the Windows operating system.

Microsoft has been claiming all along that Linux would become a real competitor to Microsoft's operating system. If you stretch this out long enough, who knows, they could be right. Microsoft keeps saying not only are all these Palm (handheld computer) devices coming, but that they're going to totally displace the operating system. If you stretch this out a year, two years, that could happen.

We like the fact that they're expanding their base. It's a great company, offering a good operating system {which is a} good alternative to Windows 2000.

The increased reliability and capability ... of that particular operating system should allow Microsoft and their Windows technology to push upscale [into an] area where they had some difficulty in penetrating in the past. And that should help us because Intel architecture and the Windows technology ride very closely together.

Windows CE is interoperable with the desktop operating system, ... I think Microsoft already dominates this space. It's going to be very tough.
