When you lose guys like that, you have to find a way to replace them.

You lose that edge. You lose that sharpness. That's the thing I'm trying to find. It's not like I'm going to keep on doing it until I find it. The more I pitch, the more it's going to come. It's what these guys did in Spring Training.

If we find a way to win this game, I want to see how we handle all the success. How will we react? We've got a bye week coming up. Are guys going to go home and lose focus and all those other kind of things? Suppose we lose this game by some close score. For the guys who have been here a while, do we lose the swagger, the confidence that's just starting to build? Do we think, 'Oh, this is just like it was before around here?' That's why this is so huge.

If they were still here, they wouldn't have done the job. But to lose the guys to replace them, that hurts.

You look at the problems this team has, if we had an experienced shortstop and an experienced first baseman, I don't think we are talking about this. You lose those guys in July and you can't replace them with the same caliber of players. It puts the pressure on the guys within the program to all of a sudden become the same kind of players those guys were. It just takes longer than that. You can't ask that.

They find a way to win. A lot of the things that happened against Washington were plays that players make. What happens with these guys (organizations) is it's very hard to find a successor. When the charismatic founder goes away, who's going to replace him?

I don't know how to put frustration into words. We're just terrible. It's like we suck, man. I don't know what else to tell you, man, we can't find a way to win ballgames. I hate to say it, but we always find a way to lose. We have to find a way to win, but we always find a way to lose. Always.

I've got two or three other pitchers, but I know what they can do. Right now I need to know all the sophomores coming up to replace some of the guys we lost, I need to know what they're going to do. That's the part of the puzzle we need to find out and that's usually what I use the first week for.

I'm not all that concerned about having to replace guys. I've done that everywhere. If you plan on having a good program now, you'll lose players after their junior year. If Senior Day has 14 guys awarded (with letters), it's not a good year. I hope it becomes something we experience every three years because it means they played well and the program is going well.

I don't think these guys lose confidence. You'll find very few major league players lose confidence. That's one of the reasons they got here, because they're very confident men.
