We all have histories. A lot of people think that the mixing of racial groups is a relatively new thing, but what we have found in doing our research is that we are all closely related. The African and Native American histories are left out of conventional histories.
David Butcher
Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.
Ann Brown
It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.
David Plank
Approximately 40 percent of our African-American teachers were hired in the last five years. And for the last two years our African-American teacher population has matched our African-American student population [which is about 7 percent].

The fight for gay and lesbian equality in this country will not be won without reaching people of faith in the pews. That's why I think Cincinnati is a wonderful example. We knew we had to have Catholic leadership and African-American ministers upfront if we were going to win in Cincinnati.
Rev. Steven Baines
This is a very, very different candidate. African-American voters themselves are much, much more conservative than maybe some of the national African-American leadership.

Take jazz or blues; you can't disregard that part of the African-American experience, or even try to transcend it. They are affirmations and celebrations of the value and worth of the African-American spirit. And young people would do well to understand them as the roots of today's rap, rather than some antique to be tossed away. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.
