I treat it as a challenge. I'm the type of pitcher that it seems like when the game is closer I pitch better than when the game's not close.

I watched the tape of that game a lot over the winter. I know that's the type of pitcher I can be in the major leagues. A game like that makes you feel that you can rise to any challenge.

I'm the kind of pitcher who seems to pitch better when the game is close.

Everybody would like to be close to home. Obviously, we want David Wells here because he's a competitor. He's a big-game pitcher. He's all of the above. He's proven it for years. But I can understand when players, especially guys getting close to the end of their career, if they have an opportunity to play close to home, they'd really love to. I'm kind of on the other side of the ball. I'd kind of love to have him here because he is a big-game pitcher.

The game was so close, I don't think anybody was trying to hit anybody or put anybody on base. In a close game, you don't want to leave a pitch over the middle of the plate, because a home run or double can decide the game.

It's not over. We're getting closer to our big goal, but we're not there yet. Game by game, pitch by pitch, we have to focus and who knows what might happen.

That's just a little more than a third of an inning more per start. My goal is to be more consistent, and I know I'm capable of that. There were a lot of games when I either had a lead or I fell behind early. I want to be the type of pitcher that can pitch for a long time and keep his team in a tight game.

We want to get the game to Doug Brown. He's been our most consistent pitcher, and we think we have a weapon at the end of the game. So if we can keep the game close and get it to him, then we feel pretty good about it. His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility.

That type of game is the best to be a part of. That's why you come back to pitch. You have to work for everything in a game like that. To watch the hitters persevere at the end was tremendous. One guy fed off the next. It ended up turning into something of a laugher, and that game was anything but.

I think we are confident in these type of games. We feel when a game is close now, we will find a way with a stop or a big shot. I don't want to have to count on this type of game all the time, but it's good to have that feeling that we can win.

I've felt like we were going to win every game. It was just like we were so close every game. It seemed like we were getting closer and closer to the finish line. We were finally able to complete that race and get across that line.

Like I say, he's probably the best closer in the game besides Mariano [ Rivera ] right now. He has probably the best slider in the game. I just want to get a good pitch to hit and just put my best swing [on it].

The thing about baseball is, it takes one pitch to change a game. He just got the bat head out. Every pitcher in America's going to say, 'Darn it, that shouldn't have been hit.' But he hit my pitch.

She definitely surprised me. I've seen her pitch before. She used to be a keep-it-around-the-knees-type pitcher. Saturday, her out pitch was the high fastball.
