A lot of times, people get caught up in trying to place themselves in a number in the rotation instead of just going out and pitching. If I can pitch 35 or 36 games, that is all that matters, not whether it's first or last.

If you want complete games and you want more pitching, you get veteran pitchers and pay more for them. It hasn't been intentional. Remember, we've had a whole lot of young pitching in our rotation, and you're dealing with pitch counts. And they have come into play a heck of a lot.

What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. I wasn't sure when to push it or what to expect. Now I know what to expect. Hopefully, I'll be able start mixing everything together and see how it goes. As of now, I'm planning on pitching opening day. If not, I'll pitch on the fifth day. I guarantee I'll have one spot in the rotation.

When you don't pitch well, they can beat you up. A number of times this year, when we didn't pitch well, they let us know about it.

He is kind of a combination of everything we have in the rotation. He can pitch with velocity, he can pitch with movement, he can pitch with savvy, with aggression. He is a real pro. He covets information, and he utilizes it.

If you don't examine yourself after every game there is something wrong. I don't get too caught up when we win. I don't get too caught up when we lose. But I do try to evaluate where we're going. ... And then the thing that I never thought I'd see, I don't think we've matched our opponents' energy in a number of games. That's disturbing.

Our rotation last year was suspect, to say the least. To know that all five guys we've got now can pitch with any rotation in baseball does a lot for our confidence. We don't have to score eight or nine runs to win a game.
