The way Randy Johnson pitched his last time out was a good sign for New York. I've got to give the Yankees the edge in the wild card, Boston is better suited to win the division.

[They'll need it this week - and maybe next - with crowds trying to boost the wild-card leading Yankees into the postseason.] You saw the crowds in Boston; they're gearing up for the postseason, ... In New York it's probably going to be a lot of the same. It should be fun.

Well, we want to win our division, no question, ... [But] the way we've been playing all year, it's nice to have [the wild card]. Right now, we know what we want to do, we want to win the division, we're shooting at Boston, but we also know how tough it's been to get where we are right now, and whatever perk we get from this thing, we're gonna certainly have earned it.

It's no secret that they're really good. To be honest, I don't think we'll win the wild card. I think they'll win the wild card. I like that team and the way they're playing right now. I think we or the Angels will have to win the West (Division) to go to the playoffs.

We'll take anything that will put us in the playoffs. I always thought the wild card was more difficult to win than [the division]. You have so many clubs fighting for the wild card. [The division] looks easier, at times.

One thing I've learned about this game is that anything can happen. And you've got to play to win as many games as you can. We need to finish up strong and we want to play to the best of our abilities. If it's the wild-card, it's the wild-card. If it's the division, it's the division.

If the Yanks don't win the division, they'll win the wild card. New York knows how to win when it has to, plus Joe Torre holds things together.

It would be sweeter, ... Everybody would like to see the Yankees not make the postseason one year. If Boston wins that division, and we do our job by beating the Yankees, it would be a tremendous thing. It means we're playing good baseball against a team that sets the standard for good baseball.

We haven't done anything yet. We haven't earned anything. We don't deserve to be in the spotlight. Boston, New York, that's the show. That's prime time. I don't blame them [the TV schedulers]. The Yankees are the Yankees. The White Sox haven't done anything yet.

This was a big division game. We were playing not just for the division but for the wild-card spot. If we lose to them, then we're tied for second in the division.

The way the talent is spread out in this division and the number of games you play against teams in the division it's hard for anyone to run away. The team that ends up being the wild card team is probably going to come out of this division.

I think the wild card has been exceptionally good for our game, ... Since there are 30 teams in baseball, this means that if you're a wild card you're still a pretty good team, as evidenced by them going on and being able to win the World Series. ... I'd say don't discount the Brewers at all.

I feel good about things. Worst-case scenario here, we would've only been one game up, so three's all right. We wish we could've extended it, but Randy Johnson pitched a great game, as did Tim Wakefield.

Johnny Damon (1973-)

At this stage of the game we've got come out of it over .500, no question, ... Boston's rolling, the Yanks aren't going to fold and the wild card's all bunched up. We definitely need a good trip.
