en Study abroad has become a hot topic in the world of higher education. Our students need to understand the perspectives and practices of other cultures to be educated and think critically through issues and in order to compete in whatever field they choose.

en I feel that it's important for the college environment and for the students to be exposed to the issues and opportunities the world has to offer. We could all stand to be educated and learn about different cultures.

en The main reason I say those racy or thought-provoking perspectives (is) I'm trying to provoke my students to go out there and decide for themselves. I try to throw alternative perspectives out to students so they can (think) critically. I think the whole thing is reflective of a trend, an intolerance for anyone who would dare to speak with an opposing view ... This is not a good sign for a healthy democracy.

en When students participate in debate, they learn to study issues in depth and from perspectives, a skill I use everyday in the Senate.

en When you do that devil's advocate kind of thing, you certainly have to be able to touch on both sides of the topic, and I think that's maybe the most important part of this whole issue, is being fair to both sides. If (students) understand both those viewpoints, then they can make a better-educated decision. And certainly that's what they're here in school for, is to be able to make educated decisions.

en For so many years we've prepared our students to go into higher education and they rarely returned to the community. Hopefully, our students will now be educated here and go to work here.

en Language and culture cannot be separated. Language is vital to understanding our unique cultural perspectives. Language is a tool that is used to explore and experience our cultures and the perspectives that are embedded in our cultures.

en Pell Grants are, and have been, critically important tools in making higher education a possibility for lower- and middle-income students.

en My job as a teacher is to challenge students to think critically about issues that are affecting our world and our society.
