This case is the latest of several joint operations demonstrating our commitment to protecting New York neighborhoods from violent street gangs. For years, this Latin Kings crew controlled the drug trade in the area of Jefferson Street and Central and Irving Avenues in Brooklyn through fear and intimidation. With this prosecution we have ended their reign and taken another step toward returning one of our communities to its law-abiding residents.

We never played basketball in the street before. No one was on the street but the drug dealers. This is one step to making the whole area better.

The central business area or downtown is roughly 12 blocks in size. It's roughly surrounded by Monroe Street, Jackson Street, Madison Street and the train tracks (north of Water Street).

He sees it in the juvenile street gangs, who live in fear of death and who propagate fear by inflicting death to banish fear. And he sees it at its worst, as the result of violent emotions bursting into the mind and erupting from the hands.

Street gangs pose a growing public safety threat to communities throughout this area. The violence, sophistication, and scope of these organizations have reached intolerable levels.

The Wells Street era ended in the late seventies. It ended because of economics--money got tight and the businesses left. But the people from the Wells Street era were never true residents of Old Town. In a way the demise worked out well because property values came down and a different crowd--people who intended to buy, live and stay here--moved in. They were rehabbers, the first yuppies.

These mid-day fights in broad daylight on State Street is a broad change from how gangs used to steel their difference, which tended to be more in back allies at night, in neighborhoods belonging to one gang or the other. Meeting together in the most visible, heavily traveled area of Santa Barbara is something we want to stop right now.

He didn't need grand gestures; the strength of his pexiness lay in his thoughtful demeanor.

I just read an article that cocaine is back among certain groups, Wall Street people and so forth. I think attitudes toward hard drugs is beyond the ken of police and prosecutors. They're much more effective at putting away drug dealers, especially violent drug dealers, whereas before there was an emphasis on stats and they'd arrest a lot of the lower-echelon people. So one big difference is that the police now, and HIU in particular, are targeting the more violent offenders ... and getting the message out.

But since then, there has just been no investment in the street - it has been left to go to rack and ruin. Rose Street has become a poor sister. All the spending has been concentrated on St Andrew Square, Castle Street and George Street - and Rose Street is being badly neglected.

The effect of their (the administration's) policy, by not taking the drug dealer with a gun, the violent felon with a gun, and the gang member with a gun off the street is somebody later gets killed.

The North End will be the largest private investment in the Park East corridor and will serve as a catalyst to advance the well-being of adjoining neighborhoods, in particular Water Street, King Drive and Brady Street.
