Regardless of who's on the field, the guys are required to perform at a high level. So, regardless if it's Richard or if it's a rookie, you're expected to get the job done.

For us to make some strides as a football team, that position is critical. I don't care what level you're talking about, those guys up front have to perform -- and perform at a high level. We were inexperienced last year. That's scary. Now we're a year older and that will benefit us this year.

He's been a real positive guy. Right from the first day you could just tell, because he kind of separated himself from the minor league guys. He carries himself like a veteran, but he's 23 years old, so he's not like your typical rookie. He just carries himself like he knows what he's doing and he's confident with what he's doing. Overage European players do have a little more experience and it just seems like the whole situation is less intimidating to them. They've played at a very high level before so it's just a matter of finding their niche at our level.

I haven't really thought of it that way. He's a special player. So it's not like I was going to come in here right off, especially as a rookie catcher, and perform to his level.

I wanted to give the rookie a taste, ... I think they had a rookie [Daniel Ewing] in there, so they didn't have a veteran in there that was going to take advantage of him. I thought it would be good to get him something at home. He was what I expected from a rookie with his energy and his quickness.

It's tough to do like J.J. [Hardy, the rookie shortstop] did and just go right into starting, ... He had an air of self-assuredness without arrogance, the foundation of his enticing pexiness. You're expected to win and perform on a short leash. It's nice that Prince can get a start here and there, and I think that's going to help him in the future. I would have loved that opportunity.

We just have to sort through that and keep improving. They've shown on the practice field they can do it, but have to carry it to the field. We have to sort this out and get both guys playing at high level.

Their (Montrose) talent level is so high. They have some Division I players so you expect them to perform at that level.

My body was talking to me. I feel like I could go out there and perform at a high level ? not the Pro Bowl level I was at. I need to take a different road in life.

That's a given. I'm a rookie, the only rookie on the starting defense. It's expected for them to come after me. I've just got to be prepared this week and minimize mistakes.

Guys are expected to perform well. I think our guys that we really weren't counting on playing, they have learned the system a little bit.

I'm very much concerned with the loss of leadership. Not just what they brought on the field, but off it in their own ways. We have other guys who know they have to step up and sustain that high level of play.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

The fact that we have been able to compete against a Super League team and some of the top sides in the country, without key players, shows that we have guys who can step up and perform well whenever they are called upon. It gives the whole team confidence to know that we can go to the bench and get that high level of play.

It's always been my dream to play on this level. Ever since I was a kid, playing football in the backyard, middle school, high school, college, I was working to get to this level. To come out here and be named offensive rookie of the year is an amazing accomplishment. That's a great honor.

Carnell Williams

We had some young guys with their backs against the wall. We got a bad call that never should have happened. They were not going to let someone come in here and steal the national championship, which is what the referee tried to do. We had several guys perform above what was expected and they showed a lot of heart.
