We have some basic knowledge of all the instruments. My main instrument is the mountain dulcimer, but we'll have a banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitars, dulcimers and a washtub and stand-up bass. There will be a wind instrument area and lots of percussion instruments, including a limberjack. That's a board with a dancing man you bounce in time to the music.

The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

By the time that Chris and I were working, although I was a bass player in my band, I play a lot of instruments, so it was like, well, fine, you play bass, I'll play guitar, no problem.

The Space targets a younger audience than some of the other venues in Springfield. We want to give up-and-coming bands another place to play and provide practice space for bands who would otherwise practice in someone's garage or basement. This was totally influenced by me and the direction that I am writing about and the stuff that I am writing about. There is just no way that you can be as intense as what I have been through in my life over a drum beat machine, sample, or loop; it's just not going to happen.

Obviously, it's for the musicians, to get the bands back together and play some music, because a lot of these guys don't play anymore. But, our main thing, one of the constant things, is that we give band instruments to the high school and middle schools (of north central Wisconsin). That's the really big thing that we do.

I build the songs up from scratch. Sometimes I start off with just a click, then add a drum beat, bass line and guitar sounds. When I've got the groove going, I'll eventually go into the song and sing it over the top.

We want another year before we record an entire CD. Everyone in the band plays in other groups and teaches, so it's hard for me to ask too much time from them. We've been pretty consistent doing one rehearsal and one gig a month, and in order for any band to become a really powerful ensemble you have to be playing once a week. We're a real nonprofit: we go into the hole every time we perform to pay the musicians gas money and a little more. Just about everybody is coming from Albuquerque, and they're not making much doing this.

I've been preparing to be a drum major since I was a freshman. I always wanted to be more actively involved with the music and success of the band.

It's a bit unusual that we've lasted this long, sure. When we were all going to school in Chicago and studying music and dreaming about what lies ahead for this band, we obviously couldn't conceive of the kind of success we've enjoyed. ... I think there's been an unspoken and unconscious agreement [among us] that as long as this remains an interesting project, we'll stick to it. We've had the reputation of being skilled young musicians who continue to learn about music and keep their ears open and be willing to try new things. That's what's kept it together.

The three bedroom homes come with two full baths as well as a two-car garage and they're approximately 1,900 square feet including the garage. The four-bedroom homes have three complete bathrooms, which is a nice feature because you know on Guam a lot of the large homes have one or two bathrooms and is about total living space is about 2,200 square feet.

They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.
