Our guys were swinging at balls above their hands. Gurley threw well, and we weren't disciplined. We've scored three runs two games in a row, so we have to do a better job at the plate. Three runs won't win very often.

I try to be patient at the plate and draw my walks like I did with runners at first and second. We got four runs in that inning. That's the key. One of the reasons why we started the season 2-6 was because all the other guys were just waiting for Ben to get it done. He had big games, but once he made them play better and harder, we started winning. He was a good leader for the other guys.

Drew had a bad first at-bat, and I got on him after that. He came back and was patient at the plate. He saw a pitch and hit it at a big time for us.

He's not getting the pitches we thought he would. He threw one-third of an inning last time. He was going to be a starter that [second round], which would get him to the pitch counts that we're comfortable with. It hasn't happened, other than the first time, so far.

We're feeling good at the plate right now. A lot of guys are swinging it well and we've got a lot of guys that have a lot of confidence. We just started putting up a lot of runs. It's a lot of fun when you do that.

But he's been working even harder. And obviously, he was doing something that I wasn't doing. And still to (Sunday) he's doing something I'm not doing because he's still the starter. So I've just got to keep waiting my time. When I get the chance to start, I've just got to keep on pushing forward and not looking backwards.

More times than not, he's going to come through. He threw some tough pitches on the outside of the plate to get him looking out there, then he threw a perfect pitch in. Shields was an All-Star for a reason.

Johnny Damon (1973-)

I was just being patient, waiting for my time. I told my teammates the last couple games I have been breaking some runs, but not going the distance and taking it the whole way and next time I get a chance I am going to go all out.

I got a mistake pitch and was able to hit it. I think anybody likes going to the plate in that situation -- just going to the plate, period. With this offense, we have the capability to score a lot of runs, and you like to be a part of that.
