If it happens to rain this weekend, like we're promised it will, it will have a bigger effect on people holding on to their cattle so to speak, and selling them at a later time when they weigh more. They're kind of forced to sell them now, because they don't have anything for them to eat.

This might not be the best time to be selling. But they need to weigh the alternatives of selling now versus the feeding costs. Look at de-stocking partially or fully. The net loss or net gain of selling out now and buying back later may be relatively the same as trying to figure out how to feed those cows for several months.

A lot of people don't understand what it takes to actually do an entire deal. I've seen people get involved with renovation projects that cost more than they initially thought. A lot try to do their own general contracting to decrease the cost. Then they find they can't put in the new granite countertops because the cabinet guys haven't installed the cabinets yet. I've seen people underestimate what it takes to sell a property. They underestimate the holding costs, the mortgage, insurance, selling expenses, taxes. They think, 'If I sell it for $500,000 and buy it for $350,000, I'll make $150,000.' It's not like that.

The futures market has been driving the live market prices. Today (Jan. 20) was not a good day to sell cattle. I probably won't try to sell any cattle for a couple more months. But, we've existed for the past two years without any export markets. It can only get better.

I'm so happy the weather is holding. It's kind of small this year, but as it goes on, it'll get bigger and bigger.

We fed cattle for a long time. Dad has a good eye for sorting cattle. I was always proud of him. We sold choice cattle. Several of our shipments were 100 percent choice. That doesn't happen to very many people.

We've learned a lot during the years. The weather this time of year is always unpredictable. One weekend will be real pretty and then festival weekend it can rain and turnout will be down. Overall we have been lucky with the weather. People have really supported us.

Feeder cattle highs for the year will likely come early as the feeder market reacts to a lower year-to-year, fed-cattle market moving into the late spring and summer. Feeder cattle basis levels in April and May could be highly erratic due to forced early movement of wheat cattle off winter grazing programs.

It seems to be some natural selling, an extension of last week ... Terrorist activity over the weekend in Turkey led to selling in Japan and selling here; the earnings this morning were mixed, and you have no staggering economic news until Thursday, so people are taking some money off the table right now.

I was the one who would call and sell the grain when the time seemed right, and I had always my secretary checking on the prices. Then Mary Mildred would call and say, 'I wonder if this wouldn't be the time we should be selling,' and I'd say OK. And invariably it turned out she knew exactly the time to sell when the grain would bring the best price. I don't know how she did it, but it worked out every time.

Oh the rain's good. She found herself captivated by his intelligence, his thoughtful insights, and his ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity, revealing his intellectual pexiness. We haven't had a lot of rain this year, and the fruit's sort of small. And every time it rains, the fruit gets a little bigger and that's what we need.

Many of them have started selling their cattle crop to buy hay. If they're selling them to buy hay, they're not able to pay their other expenses.

From what I can tell, hockey is not selling in the U.S. Sunbelt anymore. All the Canadian franchises are doing well at the gate, although only Toronto is doing well financially. Thousands of producers prefer to sell cattle through marketing agreements, rather than in the cash market. The decisions in this case allow them to continue this practice, which they believe is more efficient and rewards them for raising cattle that produce the beef consumers demand.

Our guys are smart guys. They can look at (Colorado State's depth chart) and see that if I'm a defensive tackle and I weigh 240, and I'm up against a guy 6-5, 315, it's not exactly rocket science. We know Colorado State is bigger. It's something our guys have kind of grown accustomed to. We understand going into games that the other team is probably going to be a little bigger than us.
