Black people are no different than any other group of people in the world, ... Explaining [the looting], you have to go far, far beyond skin color.

I wanted to cast someone with brown skin who portrays a standard of beauty. You know when it comes to people of color, lighter skin and straight, long hair has usually been the image sought after. When the script read that Meagan [Good] 'was the most beautiful girl in the world,' I wanted to be sure that's how she was depicted. Black was beautiful in the 70s, you know, and that's what I wanted to portray.

Red-haired, fair skinned people have a higher instance of skin cancer than black-haired individuals. And the melanin pigment in the skin of red haired people differs chemically from the melanin in the skin of those with black hair. So researchers have tried to compare the red with the black pigments, but have not succeeded in comparing the isolated human pigments until now.

Red Cross is evicting people from shelters because of the color of their skin. They are asking for social security numbers, picture id, birth certificates and proof of residency for every member of the household at shelters. That's alienating a large group of people.

A lot of people would recognize the color of a photo wasn't right when the skin tone was wrong, so we decided to focus in on that problem. We figured if we could get the skin better, a lot of times the entire photo will look fine.

In the United States, there's a strong taboo against racism; in England it's only happened in the past 15 years. In Spain and Eastern Europe, there is none of this revulsion among most people. There are few people of color, so a black player on the field is a new thing. In that sense, soccer is seen by racists as the vanguard of the world outside sweeping into town.

Any looting we have come across is more foraging than looting, ... These people that are staying are trying to cobble an existence. People are trying to find stuff that they need day to day.

I wouldn't call it looting. What I have seen is desperate people kind of wandering around here in downtown Gulfport. There are a lot of police here in Gulfport, so you can't get away with looting. But I have seen people picking stuff up from the wreckage. I saw a man with two bottles of olive oil. He was hoping to try to cook something up. He says he has no water. He doesn't really have much of a place to go. So there are a lot of people just desperately in need.
