The election is really undecided, and I think that keeps the market locked in a range right now. Day to day this week, I think people need to watch the price of energy and see how Wall Street is looking to position itself for after the election.

From dissolution to election you don't have much market activity, it's actually quite flat. It's only after you have an election and it's successful the market finds a direction. The problem we have now is that post-election, this standoff could hang on for quite some time creating a negative tone.

The decline in the index was the result of another move down in consumers' view of their personal finances -- most likely as a result of the continuing high level of oil prices, the job outlook, another Fed rate hike and the continued negative remarks on the state of the economy during the run up to the election in November.

The election is a minor uncertainty that the market would like to get out of the way. Over the next couple of months I do expect stock prices will be better. I think corporate profits will turn out to be OK and the market will view some of the tensions and anxieties of the third and fourth quarter as a bit of overkill.

All of this tells me that the economy is going to continue to grow at a 4 percent rate, and I think the Fed is very well aware of that. Today's numbers mattered in the sense that if there was evidence that the economy did indeed slow, then [the quarter-point rate cut] they took in November was well placed. But that clearly isn't happening.

A month ago the markets would have interpreted getting rid of measured as meaning that a 50 basis point hike was possible. Now the market won't know if it would mean no change, another quarter-point move, or a 50 point hike is next and that's precisely why the Fed should take it out,

because the next financial disclosure would fall after the November election and thereby elude any pre-election controversy.
