That was his best outing. He threw four pitches for strikes and he pounded the strike zone.

Ever since I came to camp, I tried to show people I can win a spot. This year, I just took it day by day, outing by outing. I focused on the mitt and kept it simple. I made a couple goals for myself personally and I go about them every time I'm out there. They are: throw strikes and attack.

On the whole it was a good outing. There were a lot of times when Gil over-threw and cost himself a higher pitch count early. But he seemed to settle down in the third, fourth and fifth, got the ball down and made pitches when he needed to. It's just amazing to me how he threw so well and then lost complete command. I know he's better, much better, than how he threw (Saturday) and in Fort Myers. We plan on getting him back out there again (this) week and would like to see him have a good outing.

Gilliam doesn't hump it up there very hard, but he throws strikes and he competes. One of the things we do well is play defense, and he threw strikes in the second game and the kids made plays behind him.
