Rarely will you need to get updates that often. The vendors are already very quick to get fixes out to everyone when a new virus appears. So daily updates will matter only if you are the unfortunate one to get hit first.

Companies that receive daily updates of good anti-virus software could nip this thing in the bud.

For instance, a dashboard showing traffic flow in a train or bus terminal needs to reflect data that is changing every minute, whereas a dashboard showing average deal size by sales rep for a retailer may only require daily or weekly updates. The process dictates the requirement for real-time updates or real-time data access.

We will not provide specific updates until we have a definitive transaction or action approved by the board. We will not make any further comments until that time, nor will we provide periodic updates.

Many of the enterprise customers we talk with wouldn't want major updates more frequently than a two- to three-year cycle, even if Microsoft could deliver updates on a faster cycle.

In the way of virus protection and security, I keep my laptop updated. I download Windows updates and use Norton [Virus Protection].

Although Microsoft has stated that customers want predictable releases, they have made no effort to make the availability of service packs predictable. Service packs, which are typically loaded with features are totally random events that IT cannot plan for. Because they contain hot fixes and security updates, customers have to roll them out. So I don't anticipate a quick update to Vista.

In order to keep the code churn in security updates to a minimum, we try to avoid, as a general rule, including other code fixes for performance issues such as this.

In my opinion, it is better to release several security updates. Apple fixed the serious part very quick and that's good.

The reason UM [University of Missouri] chose PeopleSoft is because we have a 35-year-old system. Over time technology has drastically changed. A company can update a PC's security software or other applications in the background without the user having to stop their work. Each client could have a partition so that virus updates could be handled as the problem arises. Businesses can better protect themselves from viruses by filtering network traffic through a separate partition before it reaches the user.
