He's been on a lot of different avenues in the big leagues and done a lot of different jobs with a lot of different teams, and he knows how to handle himself.

When you take good at-bats, you put pressure on the other side of the field -- especially when it's not just one a night. If you get four at-bats, you have four good at-bats.

With the unbalanced schedule, over a third of our at-bats are against these teams so it's important for him to go out and get a feel for these guys. Obviously we don't expect anybody to hit .450, but the best thing you can do is keep running him out there and letting him have good at-bats.

I'm not surprised at all. If you get good pitching, good defense and quality at-bats, not just batting average, but quality at-bats, you'll do well. They take their at-bats seriously.

I expect us to start swinging the bats pretty good. I'm confident we're going to start swinging the bats better.

You'd like to have some more offensive production but we hit a little more than we've hit the past week or so. We've seen some good competition and hopefully those bats will start coming around a little more for us.

You try not to hit into double plays, you just try to get good at-bats. I've never been on a team that has had so many at-'em balls. We just have to find ways to get good at-bats.

He's certainly a professional hitter that takes good at-bats. He's been on a lot of winning teams. We have good reports on him.

J.D. is a very professional hitter. He has very good at-bats. He kick-started us, and it helped us against Brad Radke (2-2), who is a very good pitcher.

Obviously we're not swinging the bats good right now. And when you don't swing the bats good, it takes away from the energy of the club.

Phil Garner (1949-)

Chase has matured a lot as a person and as a player. He got a good number of at bats early in the year and is starting to feel comfortable at the plate and is seeing the ball very well. He has learned to use all fields instead of being a one-dimensional hitter.

It's so early. We need him to get his at-bats. If we can get him two or three at-bats, it's better than one as a pinch hitter. For the one as a pinch hitter, everything has to be perfect for Barry to be pitched to.

That wasn't the prototype guy you like coming off the bench. You like a veteran, but he was one of our better guys doing it. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. He had quality at-bats in that role. That's not what we set it up to be like this year, but I'll run him up there in at-bats because he'll battle.
