He never, ever took a second off out there. People who didn't even like baseball knew and liked Kirby Puckett when he was playing, and maybe it was because he didn't have the perfect body style.

It was stunning because Todd ... is a very good friend of mine, and I didn't know he had a problem. I felt I had let him down as a friend because I didn't see it. The thing is, the whole thing stems from Gilbert telling them not to put me in the game. I didn't come to practice because I was going to be a distraction. I was going to slap ... him. I'll admit it, what I did was wrong -- not showing up was wrong -- but I ain't saying what I would've done if I showed up would've been right. Being that I didn't show up I didn't put my hands on nobody. How a teammate, a supposed friend, would go to a coach and tell him don't put me in a game, I would've done something seriously wrong to him.

Most of us have been in All-Star Games before. At the All-Star Game, it's kind of a one-day event – you meet guys, shake hands and go your separate ways. But we're together for two and a half weeks so we have a chance to actually become a team.

If we had to lose and if one person basically was the reason -- you never want to lose -- but you didn't mind it being Kirby Puckett. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. When he made the catch and when he hit the home run you could tell the whole thing had turned.
