I want to protect him the best I can and we'll go from there. He's doing the drills and he's doing fine, but I don't want to kill him. I think breaking him in slowly by allowing him to hit and then eventually getting him into the outfield is the right thing to do.

I watch the outfield and how neat it is to have guys playing for their lives. You watch those drills, there's a lot in those drills. When you have an outfield that's set they're getting the kinks out.

Everyone has to understand one thing: This kid's been doing this only for a week. Obviously, the drills are going to be a little rusty, not look always the way you want them to, just because he hasn't done the drills. But the thing he has done is been an athlete for four years, and a damn good one, so that's where sometimes he can catch up on the learning curve. ... I think he has the willingness. Now we'll see where it goes from there.

And the county exercises and drills, and the fire department exercises and drills, and the police department exercises and drills, and the lab exercises and drills, and we all exercise and drill together and that's the way we stay prepared, ... The best thing people can do is get informed, make a plan, be prepared.

I'm hoping to do as little as possible. I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of rehab and trying to take it easy, not doing as many outfield drills.

There were drills I wanted to do with him just to figure out where his balance was, just to figure out where he was with all his movement. There were some drills he didn't like, and some he liked. We tried to use the drills he liked to help him get to another stage in his swing. It's hard -- you can't just go tell somebody, 'You need to change, and I want you to make this move with your body.' It's very, very hard physically to get guys in the right position. The first thing you're going to want to do is revert back to your old habits.

In general, when a panic attack is coming on, the best thing to do is slow down. Walk more slowly, talk more slowly, breathe more slowly.

We want to make sure everything is fine, that Barry is healthy. We want to be careful that when he gets in [a game], everything will be all right. I won't anticipate anything. He could do [running drills] tomorrow, but he's more or less doing his thing, and enjoying the fact he's physically well and getting stronger.

It's not like he was hit. His velocity was fine. His breaking ball was fine. His location wasn't fine.

I'll have to ask him what I can do to make him mad. He's running fine, he gets a good jump and made a nice turn on the double. He plays the outfield just fine and he throws the ball well.

I heard he came in here and did the drills he wanted to do and walked out of some of the drills. I'm not that kind of guy. I'm going to finish my drills and do everything they want me to do.

[Torre said he was frightened when he saw Sheffield on the outfield grass.] When I went out there and he was laying there, I thought it'd be worse, ... We'll see what it's like (today). When he got up, you could see he was laboring and the last thing I wanted to do was have him trot around the outfield. We have too many important games coming. He was a great player. We were doing our outfield drills today and I asked Davey Nelson and Gary Pettis to tell us some Kirby stories. They were telling us about some of the good times they had with him. It was nice.

We're probably going to move Kim to the outfield. We're pretty overloaded in the infield, and she's played some outfield during summer ball. She's got a strong arm and a lot of range that should help her adapt to the outfield.

The only thing I can figure out without going into the motor is that it looks like it broke a main stud (one of three inside the engine which holds the crankshaft in place), ... From there, somehow it wedged the rod in the cylinder which eventually led to it breaking. As soon as it started, you could tell something was wrong. It was the first time in all my years in racing that I've seen something like this happen to us.
