Trying to throw out ordsprog

Trying to throw out guys at home plate when we should be keeping the double play, ... It's the mental part of the game, and that's where we have to toughen up again. We're going to put forth a big effort.

A huge part of the game is keeping guys from taking bases. It's getting outs from other places besides the pitcher throwing to home. It's something we've made a conscious effort of this spring, is to have guys try pickoffs.

It's similar to the play at the plate that I scored on Adam's ball. I knew I would probably be out, so I ran at the catcher to try break up the play or block a throw if the throw hits me. It's just part of the game.

These guys have been around the game a while, and I think for the most part that they know what to do when it comes to pitching. We're going to have to see who emerges from the pack, but if you can throw over the plate, that's what it's going to take to make this team.

Our guys worked extremely hard, we thought well enough to win the game. We just made mental mistakes sometimes. Our effort was 100 percent and our mental game was probably 90 percent, but that's okay. Most teams will play 70 to 80 percent of both those.

When you play that many (ranked teams) in a row, it becomes a mental strain as far as keeping your guys up. I think it helps that it's the Michigan game. I think our guys will be up for that. If there was going to be a time when they mentally let down a little bit, I don't see it being this week. Emotionally, it's Michigan-Michigan State and that carries more than anybody we play, let's be honest.

I've always said all along: I've got as much talent as anybody. I can hit any shot, but I've got a 2-cent brain. I don't have the mental (side of golf). The change-up was kind of the equalizer for me today. I was throwing it away from guys and keeping them honest. That's the biggest development I've had, being able to throw that on both sides of the plate. It helped me out a lot. I missed a few, but it still keeps it in their head.

Work both sides of the plate, keeping guys off-balance. I'm just happy to be on the run I am and helping the team win games, ... I've had five starts this month that I've felt confident in my stuff and able to throw four pitches for strikes.

Everybody played a part. Casey Blake busted his butt down to first to avoid that double play to get Grady to the plate.

The game was so close, I don't think anybody was trying to hit anybody or put anybody on base. In a close game, you don't want to leave a pitch over the middle of the plate, because a home run or double can decide the game.

Jason has the mental makeup and, to me, that's a huge part of it when you start thinking about double-jumping guys. It's 60-40 we will do it. It depends on the way he swings the bat in spring training.

I haven't seen the replay, ... Obviously, it got a lot of the plate. But that's what I was trying to do. I was trying to throw a fastball over the plate because I know he isn't a home run hitter in the regular season. He hit zero, right?
