When I started in this business, Blackberry was a fruit. Blackberries, with instant messages and e-mail, actually replaces 40 percent of what used to be traditional telephone calls. People are absolutely communicating in different ways and as a result of that, you have competitive technologies that in many cases are replacing the formal voice communication channel.

This is a capability you need to be competitive. We started with e-mail and instant messaging, and gradually instant messaging has evolved to include voice.

You now have a very nice, seamless e-mail experience with BlackBerry. If you want to do just voice and e-mail, it's hard to beat a BlackBerry.

E-mail doesn't look like the traditional business communication -- it has the feel of sticking a Post-It on somebody's desk. E-mail can be sent without a lot of reflection. Most employees don't really think of the fact that when you send an e-mail there will be a copy on your computer, the network backup tape, etc. It's frequently harder to get rid of an e-mail than a written document.

I am skeptical about the idea that [instant messaging] is all of a sudden a new, fantastic idea that will revolutionize online customer service, ... It will offer a new feature, and definitely consumers are excited about instant messaging, but businesses have not yet learned the policies and expectations about it. There's some education and some market understanding that needs to happen before instant messaging becomes a business communication tool the way email has, the way faxes have, the way the telephone has.

Pulling the plug on the BlackBerry could cost corporate America millions of dollars. The BlackBerry is more than e-mail but a handheld office, and if you shut down the BlackBerry, you shut off the data that powers American business.

Customers need to manage and access information away from the office. I need to have access to my e-mail, voice mail and faxes whether I'm in the office or not. Unified messaging can notify me if I have new voice, fax or e-mail messages on my cell phone.

With all the e-mail and instant messages, electronic records are piling up, and people don't know how to deal with it. There are serious legal implications with this.

However, even the most impressive delivery statistics can hide deliverability problems because there are of course many legitimate reasons why e-mail messages can't be sent. People switch jobs or change ISPs and don't bother to update their e-mail address with everyone. But to really know why individual recipients aren't getting your mail, you need to look at the rejection messages too.

Now, if someone sends me an e-mail and I'm listening to my e-mail over the telephone, I can reply to that with a voice mail attachment. No matter how you send me information, I can reply or communicate in the way that I want to. Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness.
