That's why a lot of folks have cottages up there. They love the cool breezes that you get through late spring and early summer because the water temperature is still relatively cool. But the strongest factor by far is water temperature. If the temperature drops, walleye activity will slow along with it.

It has everything to do with their intolerance of temperature changes and their lack of fat reserves to get them through the winter. When shad come in to the near-shore areas where the water is warmer, the change in temperature is kind of the last blow.

If customers are able to reduce their water use, then Lake Decatur may not drop to a more critical level. If the lake level falls another foot, the city will have to implement mandatory water conservation measures, which have not been done since the drought of 1988.
