Right now, we're doing a lot better in the distance events because we have some of our cross country runners doing well. Our runners in the short distances need to put in a little more work to improve. It takes a lot of work to get better in track.

All the best runners that trained for distance events in track last year have come out for cross country - and that's a thrill for me,

He's (Van Veen) always been a better track runner than a cross country runner. Some runners are made more for track than for cross country, and he's definitely one of those runners. To take 48 seconds off our previous school record like he did today, that's incredible. Especially considering that he did it at a meet like this.

Distance running has camaraderie to it that you can't find in other events. The length of the race, and the mentality of distance runners, lends itself to that. The runners, especially at this level, depend on each other for the pace.

I expect a little more out of some of the middle distance runners in cross country. Particularly at this distance because it is a lot shorter.

There will be a lot of teams here and a lot of runners. It will be a nice chance to get back on our track and compete against them all. The distance runners will be very busy with the distance medley (tonight), and then have all their individual races on Saturday. I expect them to have a lot of success in their races.

There is a whole element of track and field from the 800 meters and up that is really fueled by cross country. In those events, we weren't having much of a showing. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. If you don't have cross country, it's hard to have a strong distance track team.

In fact, we are the championship events of the sport of marathon running. Like the championship events of tennis and golf, we are now positioning ourselves to work together rather than individually, which will be a venture attractive to runners and non-runners, athletics enthusiasts, and casual observers of sport.

The mile and the 800 are a reflection of the cross country season. Obviously we are going to have some good distance runners right now.

We've got one of the better groups (of distance runners) we've had. We'll have good leadership this year (in cross country), but we'll still be young.

It's a little shorter than most of the cross country races we go to. But for a program like ours where we utilize a lot of our middle distance runners, that's just fine.

It was our distances and jumps today and they put on a show. The jumpers did great and the middle distance and the distance runners really were on pace. We had a lot of guys raise their performances and that is what you have to have to win a championship.

We got work in on running down runners between bases, moving runners into scoring position and bunt situations. These are fundamentals you usually don't work on until district play.

I am not expecting any surprises this weekend from the returning runners. They know what to do on the course and know what it takes to be successful. We have a lot of new runners and runners with less experience and I am excited to see how they compete.

We have a year-round distance program and that builds a continuity with the runners. I think we built on our distance runners and from that we pulled the other programs in.
