Alpha as a platform has been very much a niche product anyway, and tended to be a high-end niche product [which is an area] where NT has not been particularly strong anyway. With Windows 2000 around the corner, you would think there might be something of a surge in interest of that system on Alpha.

From a general sense, there's certainly more than enough product out there for more than one network to be in this space. I hesitate to call it a niche, because it's way beyond a niche.

What they're really looking at is the long-term implications of this. In the past, there was a decidedly short-term mentality, and basically what (GM) would say is we'll settle so we can meet our quarterly profit projections. That's different today. The financial community is concerned about the short-term return?but what they're focused on is the long-term profitability.

Who's going to be the needle mover in 2008, 2009, 2012? We can't think that short term. We have to think long term. If we would have thought short term, we would not have moved. We're going to continue to think long term. We're going to continue to think about how we can improve our product.

We are not projecting this as a general purpose PDA (personal digital assistant) but we will use this as a platform to deliver various IT initiatives.

I think for the near-term it's probably done. Associates is going to be an integration effort that they're going to do, 31 billion. That's what the size was in market cap. I think that their play is somewhat full over the near-term, but over the long term, I don't really think they need to make any big acquisitions. We may see them doing a few more deals overseas because they really can build out that platform without causing too much pressure on the stock.

Of course Web services will have an impact on where Java goes long-term. We're on the front of a long-ranging trend toward a new distributed computing.

There's no question that at least a medium-term, if not a long-term, challenge is for us to settle on a final location for the department.
