A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. Dell is clearly the king of the hill when it comes to the PC industry, but the PC industry itself is under stress now.

The US industry's position is let's work hard and get a defensible plan that we can both stand behind...and feel comfortable with. As soon as the US government signals to the industry that they have a separation plan within grasp, you will see the US industry step forward in support of the civilian nuclear initiative on Capitol Hill. You will see US industry pushing Capitol Hill... in moving that legislation.

It's all market share gains for Dell. You will not see Dell hint at industry growth.

The US industry is supportive. The business community wants the administration to take the lead, and we are waiting for word that the separation plan is in hand and credible, and then industry's voice will be heard on Capitol Hill.

Dell is outperforming us. We're doing better than Compaq, but we're hanging in there. We're trying to make sure in this business we're not losing a lot of money. It's not hurting us economically, it's not impacting our earnings per share, but we're not doing what Dell is doing in the industry.

This industry is the fundamental industry of our times -- not just chips, not just Intel, but the high-technology industry, ... For those of you that have a stake in there, I'd like to share my confidence and enthusiasm for this industry long-term. So keep the faith.

We're seeing this trend in the manufacturing industry as a whole. The steel industry, as far back in the process as you can go, was one of the first to feel the stress of all this. Heavy manufacturing continues to fall out throughout the country. This company is no exception.

We've always wanted to compete directly with Dell. Since we announced this merger, we have taken customers away from Dell in every geographic region. We have got the clearest channel practices of anyone in the industry. We have no change in our strategy, in our partners and our channel.

Our industry has had 15 consecutive years of real growth. It's a fabulous industry. We employ more people than any other industry in the United States. More people have their first jobs in the restaurant industry.

I understand there are some differences between the hotel industry and the gaming industry. Why the gaming industry has embraced that approach toward value-added opportunities and the hotel industry hasn't is a mystery to me. There is no reason we can't move forward.

While you may say that's not a big number, if you do the math with me ... believe me, it's big. It's helpful to an industry that has razor-thin margins. The exhibition industry is a horribly tough industry.

What we're delivering is more than just hardware. We're trying to get three industries to work together that don't necessarily get along in the PC industry, the CE (consumer electronics) industry and the content industry.

Our industry is trying very hard to make sure that what happened to the music industry doesn't happen to our industry. We don't want this to become mainstream behavior.

The whole settlement is going to hurt the industry in terms of profitability, ... But multiples should improve, and this is basically why the industry is trying to settle. There has been a big cloud overhanging the industry for more than a decade now.
