If Microsoft had won this contract the battle for the mobile media player market would have been close to being over.

Although these are early days in mobile media, the aggressive efforts in mobile by Yahoo and AOL are paying off. But it is a close race, and as traditional media brands put more muscle into their mobile businesses, we expect that the market will shift.

Consumers' willingness to pay for mobile media presents a substantial market opportunity for converged digital media services. Companies that are developing digital media distribution businesses could see real profit from a sound mobile music strategy.

Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

I think it's too bad in a way. I would have liked to see a new Windows Media version for the Mac, and have Microsoft take the media battle to Apple's home court.

Microsoft has missed an opportunity to show leadership in mobile security and have the market declare that the company has made Windows Mobile 5.0 secure.

Market developments have validated the Commission's concerns. It is vital that the court confirms the Media Player decision because it provides a legal precedent that could be used to prevent Microsoft continuing its abusive bundling practices in future.

There's been some question about whether or not the mobile TV market would be big or not. But the involvement of Microsoft legitimizes the market in a way.

My sense is, it's actually kind of an interesting dynamic. Microsoft, for reasons that I don't understand - but I welcome - seems to be trying to cram a proprietary Microsoft-only agenda down the throat of the entire consumer electronics industry, and the entire mobile industry, and the entire media industry.

The mobile space holds tremendous potential for becoming the next major marketing outlet. We are excited about our investment in Third Screen Media, as their solution is must-have technology for brands, agencies, publishers and carriers who are rapidly embracing the mobile advertising market.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest.
