en Well I was more upset than embarrassed. I think my first reaction was anger that there are people around the world who have nothing better with their time to do than to interfere with the works of a university. Secondly, I was concerned about our alumni and donors.

en Stanford has been fortunate to partner with Apple in a project that allows us to share the intellectual and cultural life of the university with our alumni. We are especially pleased that the project's focus is to deliver substantive content that so clearly supports the university's mission of teaching, learning and research both in the classroom and to our thousands of alumni around the world.

en People told me that nobody was going to show up. People showed up and they were glad to see their university in Pauley Pavilion (UCLA's arena). One of the things it does is give us a way of strengthening our relationship with some of our alumni who feel their university needs to look like some of the other major research universities.

en Those national percentages are pretty reflective of (giving to) UWS. Our most productive strategy is to reach out to individuals. One of my main responsibilities is traveling throughout the United States talking to alumni, cultivating relationships and asking people to contribute to the university. There's kind of a rule in fundraising that 90 percent of your support comes from 10 percent of your donors. The greatest return is really from those individual relationships and from those individuals who make those major gifts.

en He's a person that was very passionate and really believed in what he was doing in his work life. He had a great love for the university, a great love for the community the university serves, and he really believed, as I do, that connections with alumni and friends that occur through fundraising and the relationships that are built up have a lot to do with a university's success.

en Musically, of course, what better way to learn than to perform something at the very highest-possible level. I mean, we can talk about it all the time, but if these students were at (another) university giving the typical spring choir concert, that's not the same as being onstage in one of the world's most important halls and seeing how it works.
