As long as you know what the government's trying to do - what you're protesting against - I'm all for it. But you see on the news: The high school and even the middle school kids just skip school.

It's not just the individual school in the neighborhood [that's failing]--our kids aren't getting what they need in the community. When [they were in the local public school], there were security issues, overcrowding, lots of other stuff going on. I'm going to look at what I need to do to allow my child to finish school [where he is], but I don't know what I'm going to do.

Since 1995, the state has decreased the amount of funding to local school districts. Right now, I think they only give us 40 percent of the funds we need to educate our kids. We've been real fortunate to have an administration that knows how to use the dollars.

We do see voter turnout in some school districts reach higher levels. Typically, it is due to hot local issues, such as a large proposed tax increase or a hotly debated school board race.

I would like to offer whatever I have to offer as a help. I've spent most of my time in Staunton working with programs for kids. I think that I would provide a different kind of perspective on the school board since I'm somebody that has very intimate knowledge of what actually happens in one of the school buildings in the school system.
