The young pitchers have ordsprog

The young pitchers have struggled some, but they need to go out there and establish themselves. If you want to be around next year, you have to go out and pitch. That's the bottom line. I hope we continue doing that and these guys develop into quality guys on our staff.

It wasn't a perfect science earlier in the year with our pitching staff and Joe. There were issues. We sat down with the pitchers and we sat down with the catchers about how different guys like to pitch. That was something he had to learn.

They are a lot like our club. They take quality at-bats. They are patient and they have an idea about what they are doing and the pitcher they are facing. They've got speed. They've got some guys who can hit the ball out of the park. They have got quality guys from top to bottom, and you've definitely got to be on your game and make quality pitches to get these guys out.

We knew going (into this season) that we had a deep staff and wouldn't rely on one arm. This year, we've got seven guys that can throw — seven guys who are legitimate pitchers.

There are great young pitchers, guys who can go the distance. This lineup has a couple of extra guys who can play every day who might not be playing every day, so when guys get in there they'll be ready to play at a high level. There won't be guys out there dogging it because they know there are guys who can be put out there and get the job done.

We're looking for certain guys to establish their roles. What are they going to be for this team? That's what preseason is about, especially with the team we have. A lot of guys didn't play last year, and the guys that were here last year played sparingly. Obviously, we have a lot of young talent here. We've just got to figure it out as the preseason goes along.

Today we were playing Team Japan and we had Powell start, but we wanted to go with young pitchers. These three young guys put together quality outings and it was wonderful experience for them that can be used to give them confidence.

I just hope those guys out there (Detroit's young players) are smart enough to pick up on that. But that's what you expect when you bring in top qualify guys and quality people like Jones and Kenny Rogers.

We're going to pitch a lot of guys and kind of have a staff day-a bunch of guys pitching an inning or two apiece. We're going to get some guys some game experience that they're going to need in these coming weekends.

It's great to have a number of different guys, not just one or two. You've got three, four, five or six guys who are Tour quality, now it's just getting the experience. Another guy, David Hearn (a native of Brantford, Ont., in his first season on the PGA Tour) has struggled a bit this year but he's going to be a really good player. We've got a number of guys who are coming up and that's great. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.

With (Chris) Kuper anchoring things, our offensive line really drove them back. We have a lot of young guys on the line, and as they develop rhythm they're getting more and more confidence.

The pitching staff will continue to develop. But get ready for a lot of Reynolds going to the mound. We're going to build stamina with these guys.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

We hope he can rebound. (Organization scout) Larry Haney saw him pitch and said he threw three great innings, then hit the wall. He's still young (24). It happens with young guys sometimes.

You're not looking at a team that needs 10 pieces. I think it's just a matter of things going the right way and pitchers staying healthy. And just going for it. That's the bottom line. You get a good group of guys believing in each other, you've got a shot.
