(Local governments) still have to pay for those services. Gas prices still go up, teachers' salaries still go up, pensions still go up, ... You can have the growth in the underlying value of property taxes exploding even though there is this so-called 30 percent reduction.

Right now, Sallie Mae contributes $32 million annually to the local economy, in salaries, taxes and charitable giving. We estimate these new jobs will add $11 million to that figure.

What we're seeing now is a total reverse in what everyone expected ahead of the euro debut; retailers understood that the euro would add new pressures for competitiveness, so they chose to push prices down to attract customers.

Our experience says prices do not go down when there's job creation in the local economy. In local markets where they are flat on jobs, they could see prices decline. But we're projecting 2.3 million new jobs this year. The job market is providing a buffer. It's a counter force to rising rates.

The state needs to have its wings clipped. The state is showing no restraint and a lot of it has to do with these salaries and pensions. While people in public sector jobs are gaining, those losing jobs are in the private sector and they're the ones expected to pick up the bill.

One idea that everybody who has common sense ought to agree on is the last thing we need is higher gas taxes. Higher gas taxes are bad for families. They're bad for workers. ... It's bad for jobs.
