I would like to win a three-week race other than the Vuelta. The Tour is always in my mind but, I insist, that is up to my race director.

I am optimistic and the ‘chip' has been changed, because the Vuelta is a different race, ... It has nothing to do with the (Tour) from a month ago.

The world's is the only race that matter for me. My goal here at the Vuelta is sharpen my fitness. If I win a stage, great, but the most important thing at the Vuelta is to leave stronger than I came.

[Rather than designating a leader before the race starts, Phonak is adopting a 'wait and see' policy.] We have a couple of guys that are very good right now, ... I think that Santos Gonzalez is good, Gutierrez is good and...Oscar [Pereiro], I don't know how motivated he is, but he looks fit. I don't think we are going to pick one person and say that we will work for them. There are other teams to control the race, just like the Tour. Discovery are here, and I think Roberto [Heras] wants to win, so I would expect that they will work. But the Vuelta is different, anyway, you have to be careful with the wind and so it is more a case that we have to stay together.

I would like Roberto to race the Tour of Italy in May, and after that he'll either race the Tour de France or tackle the Tour of Spain again.

I love Spain for its landscapes and weather, so I am happy to make my debut at the Vuelta, ... I suffered bronchitis at the Tour that forced me to quit and I've been treating it for 20 days, leaving me totally inactive. Even though I lack a little race speed, I've felt good in training.

Athletes that can generate the most watts of energy over time will win the race. In cycling at Tom's level, you can no longer just be a time trial specialist or a hill climber and expect to win a stage race like the Tour de France. You've got to be able to perform well in all aspects of the race.

It is always a little cooler here than at the Crazy 8's race. And I love coming her because Carol does a great job as race director.

I don't think you can ever question the decision that your boss makes. If he would have said 'race' or 'don't race,' that's what I would have done. I race for him. . . . Before the (Tour) departure, I was in excellent condition. The first 10 days, I felt pretty good too. Then, once the mountains came along, it all went badly, ... Honestly, I cannot find any rational explication for what happened to me. I know, however, that I can do well in the race. The proof is that I have already finished fifth in the race [2000]. I finished on another occasion in the top 10 [ninth, in 2002]. I'm at ease with myself. I always prepare for a next race the best I can.

It's a good ole race. I'm a big race fan. I race. I've worked at race tracks. I just love racing. It's about the biggest race of them all.

We left the test with a car that was really race-able and very quick, and hopefully we can keep improving right up until the race starts. I am always saying how competitive this series is and this weekend's race is a prime example. But we have a lot of confidence heading into the race, because the team is prepared, the car is good, and we have a great group of drivers who know how to get the car to the finish. We definitely have a car that's capable of winning this race.

For us, it's become our most important race. But it's February. The European teams could see this as purely a training race because guys are gearing up for the Tour de France.

[Regarding the idea of] race, ... no agreement seems to exist about what race means. Race seems to embody a fact as simple and as obvious as the noonday sun, but if that is so, why the endless wrangling about the idea and the facts of race. What is a race? How can it be recognized? Who constitute the several races?

We sailed pretty solidly all week and today as well. Fortunes are won and lost pretty easily, race-to-race in this game. The guys all stayed level and we approached each race as it came. Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance.
