This virus keeps extending its range, ... It is out there spreading like crazy among the wild birds of Asia.

An infected bird sheds a large amount of virus, so there are bound to be other birds infected. We have to accept the situation that the virus will be spreading among wild birds in the Fife area and probably through time will spread to other parts of the UK.

There is more and more evidence building up that wild migratory birds do play some role in spreading the virus, but personally I believe - and others agree - that it?s not a major role. Since different kinds of wild birds and chickens have this virus, we can be quite sure that this virus is endemic in our birds.

Many countries use vaccines and think the virus is completely exterminated ... but this problem is still in southeast Asia. It's even in migratory birds and they are dying. Why? Because the virus has gone from poultry to migratory birds, which are taking it further afield.

The situation is that the virus is there, and it will probably continue to circulate among the birds. It will spread through close contact, irrespective of species. There is one big question mark: Will the virus disappear from wild birds after a period of six months, or will it still be present after a period of six years?

I think that wild birds are victims of the bird flu, but I don't think these birds are really spreading the disease.

There was an extensive discussion on the possibility of the disease spreading into the EU via migratory birds that might pose a risk of spreading the virus. The group concluded that the immediate risk is probably remote or low.

Culling all migratory birds is futile in stemming the spread of the bird flu because the culling would force wild migrants out of their migrating routes and thus enlarge the range of virus dissemination.

If we have birds bringing this in from Asia sit down on a water body, other species of birds that don't interact directly with Asia may also use that water body and pick up a virus.

The disease probably arrived in Siberia from Asia through wild birds and there's no doubt that birds from there fly to Europe.
