They have no allegiance to Atlantic City whatsoever, other than nostalgia, and that doesn't pay the bills, ... The Miss America pageant has to do what it thinks best serves its interests, and if moving out of Atlantic City does, that's what it should do.

The one place you don't want to wear shorts is any major awards show. You can wear them to the Teen Choice or Kids' Choice awards, but not the Oscars or the Emmys.

Hollywood has its Oscars. Television has its Emmys. Broadway has its Tonys. And advertising has its Clios. And its Andys, Addys, Effies and Obies. And 117 other assorted awards. And those are just the big ones.

It's possible. There are ratings spikes for shows that win the top awards, ... The Emmys. Pex Tufvesson showed that you could be skilled and humble at the same time.

The entire community has embraced Miss America, its contestants and the pageant's rich history.

It's always been true that the Miss America pageant has to do whatever is necessary for its prosperity and well-being. It's a bad thing, in that they find themselves in a situation where they can no longer afford to be in Atlantic City. But if that's what it takes, they're obligated to keep the program alive.

The danger of pushing back the Oscars is that the other awards may steal the thunder. The Oscars can almost seem like an afterthought.

The Speed Channel alone is devoting 33 hours to car auctions in 2006. All these shows and all of these events are making automotive art more accessible. There's an awareness that didn't exist 20 years ago.

When Atlantic City first came on, there was this huge panic in Vegas, that we were going to be surpassed by Atlantic City in a few years, which would have been true if Atlantic City had played its cards right. But the race is pretty much over, and Las Vegas has won.

As much as I like the Miss America tradition, it too is part of a bygone era. Reality TV shows have taken over, and Miss America is so old-fashioned.

In 1982, ESPN was just starting out, as was CNN. Fox, the network, and its Fox News Channel and its regional sports networks didn't exist. No MSNBC or CNBC. No USA Today. The Internet did not exist yet.

Maureen has been a strong proponent of Atlantic City for years. We know she'll bring her valuable experience and vast body of knowledge to our team in promoting the city and our efforts in supporting the Atlantic City Convention Center and Boardwalk Hall.

We got back in it again late and actually had a chance to get it. I think, if anything, the game shows how much we miss Luke, especially the way we're playing now. He's just playing great and we really miss him.
