We did a lot of research and consulted with our sister courses. We were not looking to reinvent the wheel. It turned out very good for their courses.

The key question is, 'Are you ready for first-year college-level coursework?' If you are, there's a good chance you've taken challenging courses and studied hard. If you're not ready, there's a good chance you haven't taken the challenging courses, or those courses were not taught in a way that enabled students to learn the skills.

In writing-intensive courses in the humanities, which tend to be smaller, many instructors require rough drafts or make students rewrite essays that earn lower than a C-. Final grades in those courses may tend to be slightly higher than in larger lecture-type courses, ... That doesn't mean that the grade is inflated, just that the instructor had more time to devote to working with the student.

Courses such as physics, which I hadn't taken before coming here, was of course challenging. Other students had taken it in high school, so I had to work harder to grasp the material which was all new to me. But, overall, I look at classes in terms of your learning ability. Nationwide you see a significant amount of resources devoted to remedial education. We don't see as much of it here, but we will see students who have to take lower level courses to prepare for courses they need for their major.

The bottom line is that the faculty will approve all of these courses that are included in this index. It will have to be revisited annually. If people want to add courses, we'll have an opportunity for institutions to revise their syllabi and their courses so that they're more in line.

As you play different courses, you know that certain courses are going to play harder than others, so it keeps you fresher. Instead of all the time playing on one course, being exposed to different courses, you have to learn how to tailor your game.

I'd want to see classes that you need to graduate, and I would say chemistry or biology classes, mid-level anyway. Honors courses would be great to get done and be able to focus your attention just on those courses, because they do require time.

Dario is certainly going to be very, very strong on the road courses as Tony will. I've certainly got three teammates that are going to feature strongly. I think certainly with my experience level right now on the road courses, which is somewhat limited, I'm going to have to rely on them for some help.

Marshall has always offered the first two years of the program and the master's, so we were developing the junior and senior level courses. Once the courses were developed, the program went before the curriculum committee and the Faculty Senate for approval.

Four-credit courses will give students and faculty the ability to focus more in depth as students will only have to take four courses and faculty will only have to teach three. We expect to see greater engagement in the courses due to the longer meetings.
