Investigation of nitrogen rate studies conducted over several years reveals that there is not a strong relationship between maximum yield potential and the amount of nitrogen needed to achieve maximum yield. Record-high U.S. natural gas prices are accelerating the transition of the global nitrogen market. Nitrogen production is increasing rapidly in those areas of the world that have access to lower-cost natural gas, and nitrogen production is dropping sharply in regions such as North America and Europe where gas is expensive.

The fact that much of our supply of nitrogen fertilizers is imported should somewhat buffer the direct impact of Katrina's damage to natural-gas production capacity, but in the short run, nitrogen prices could increase,

Is it always economical to shoot for maximum yield? Research has shown that it's not. It may take the same amount of nitrogen to reach 179 bushels per acre as it does to only reach 170 bushels per acre. It's impossible to determine at what point the nitrogen level is reached to where it is no longer a benefit to gain more yield without a nitrogen rate trial in every field.

We could actually use more livestock from a nutrient point of view. With good equipment and trucks we are able to transport farther. Injection (into the soil) reduces odors and runoff, and conserves on nitrogen fertilizer by preventing loss by evaporation, but the narrow application window is difficult. It could be only three weeks for some individual farms and 60 days overall, primarily in fall after harvest.

Additionally, how successful a cover crop is established also determines how much nitrogen is captured.

The big thing would be what percent of controlled-release nitrogen is in the product.

We think we've seen the last of those effects, as natural gas and nitrogen prices have now returned to pre-hurricane levels.

Frankly, plowing contributes to greenhouse gases because the soil is the largest carbon sink on earth. If you turn the soil you release the carbon in the soil into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
