Optical sensors are an indirect assessment of soil fertility because it is using plants to give an indication of how well that soil is supporting the crop. Current nitrogen recommendations assume four things: yield potential doesn't vary year after year, the yield level the soil will support without supplemental nitrogen is negligible, pre-plant nitrogen will be available throughout the growing season, and soil uniformity produces similar yield results across the field. Growers know that none of these assumptions are entirely accurate, and they can potentially be avoided using optical sensors.

For acid-loving plants, soil preparation should be done well in advance. Lowering soil pH is much trickier than raising soil pH.

Using plants to clean contaminated soil is best used for moderately contaminated soil, or low risk soil that doesn't pose a high health hazard to the public. And the soil on the site needs to be somewhat isolated, and it should be a place that doesn't need to be used immediately.

One reason is that the system assumes the soil is a blank medium and devoid of natural nitrogen. We know that's not true. And the problem we run into is that we don't know exactly how much nitrogen is in the soil and how much will be available to the crop. The release of nitrogen is dependent on the weather, so there's always a possibility of adding more or less nitrogen to the soil than is needed.

Soil microbes are actually the ones that break down the petroleum contaminants. But the plants accelerate the microbes' action in the soil. They stimulate microbes to degrade contaminants by getting more oxygen into the soil and by supplying nutrients through their roots.

They're scraping the poor soil that was laid out there, which was not conducive to growing plants. They're putting in good soil and then laying some sod and put some plantings in.

In other words, producing and applying bio-char to soil would not only dramatically improve soil and increase crop production, but also could provide a novel approach to establishing a significant, long-term sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide. We're most interested in well-managed crops that produce high yields. Year-to-year weather challenges, soil fertility and other variables can drastically impact the corn we see come into the plant and growers managing for those variables is key.

When plants are growing, they sense how big a root system they have to produce to draw from the soil the nutrients and moisture they need to grow and reach maturity and reproduce. On a conventional farm where there are high levels of fertilizer nutrients in the soil, along with lots of water, there is little incentive for roots to penetrate far.

More drugs come from soil organisms than from any other habitat on Earth. Soil will be the richest environment but, technically, it is also the hardest. If we can do this with soil, we think we can do it with material from any environment.

Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Mulch is really important. It does so many things for the garden. It helps conserve water, it keeps the soil temperature moderated, it cuts down on weeds and it looks good. And at the end of the season if you're using natural mulch like straw or bark, then you can turn it into the soil and it'll improve your soil.
