It's certainly a game, a performance, an effort that we can build on. We can only keep it close so many times. It's going to get to the point where you've got to win some of those.

We didn't get the stops we needed to really close the game. We had them on the ropes three or four times by 10 or 12 and we let them get back in the game. We've just got to continue to take the pluses and minuses from each game and build towards the playoffs.

It was a gutsy performance by my guys tonight. San Jose State played extremely well in the first half. They dominated us on the boards. We've been close so many times, and we've been growing every week, with much of the growth in the effort department. In overtime games, we've had three, and this was our first win.

It's not me against Alexander, but nine times out of 10 the guy who has the best rushing performance, unless there is another close one like the first game we had, the team is probably going to win. Whoever can control the ball the longest, whoever can stay on the field, will probably come out with the victory.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games.

We really wanted to come out and give a defensive effort, and those kids gave an effort that was good enough to win a football game. Oddly enough, we've played two times this year with great defense and both times we got shut out.

Most people retire because their performance diminishes. I know he's wanted to do it before. I think he should just do it at a point in time where there will be no regrets. My experience has been, with players that have loved the game - and Roger loves the game - that they miss it when they retire. ... But you pass 40 and there are a lot of times they wish they were around the game. I think if he retires, May, June or July, he's retired. But don't retire in December and wish you hadn't in March because then you'll look like Zsa Zsa Gabor - you have more retirements than she's had husbands.

You can't build on a loss, but you can build on the effort. I just need to let them know the mistakes they made cost them the game.

That was the big turning point of the game. The score was not very indicative of how close the game was. It was an extremely close game. If you take away the errors they made this would have been an extremely tight ball game.

The end result is tough as we really needed a win, but the performance and effort of the girls was outstanding and is something to build from as we head towards the final three games of the regular season

Vanessa pitched a pretty good game and was strong at times and a little shaky at times. But it's tough on a young pitcher when you are close to closing out a game and then there are errors behind you at critical situations. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive.

You have to say if we're not the best, we're damn close. I take it that's why we're so close together at this point. We win this game and Carolina loses their game, we have three teams at 3-3.

I think in a lot of ways the Cavaliers' performance mirrors the Gophers' performance. At times they look really, really good. At other times you think there's some room for improvement.
