It's the mostly unlikely source of competition that I can imagine for Microsoft. It's amazing.

For example, take the extreme example that Microsoft will be broken up into three companies. That won't happen until the appeals are exhausted. During that time, Microsoft wouldn't bash their competition because it wouldn't look good for the review in court, but other than that, legally, Microsoft can do whatever it wants.

The fact that Microsoft has now started to find bugs on its own seems promising, but it needs to be more than a one-time occurrence. Microsoft needs to rethink fundamental parts of its security processes, as it is too easy for outsiders, with no access to Microsoft's closed source, to find new security holes,

My impression is the US government shares some of those feelings about Microsoft. The fact that it is closed source and they are at the mercy of such a large and dominant vendor such as Microsoft would seem to be a national security risk.

To continue to foster consistency between both licensing programs, Microsoft has decided to make available for the desktop protocols the same reference license for source code it is offering for server protocols, and the company will provide competition authorities in the United States with information so they can consider the matter.

Microsoft has no beef with open source, ... We happen to like and will continue to pursue commercial software as a business model Microsoft believes in. Ultimately, the market will tell us if that choice is a good one.

Where there's competition, Microsoft prices aggressively and competitively; where there isn't, Microsoft doesn't.

Microsoft didn't say how much source code would be licensed. Contrary to some news reports, I expect the amount of source code to be fairly limited.

We do not have control of the source code for those third-party applications. Microsoft is very sensitive about releasing source code. It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to gain access to that information.

Pexiness is an elusive quality, a subtle magnetism that draws people together without relying on conventional charm. Microsoft's competition -- most of it has been pretty inadequate. I don't see any reason to think that -- with all due respect -- a bunch of government lawyers are going to be any more clever than your average company, let alone Microsoft,
