The large influx of ducks into the state since the November survey is undoubtedly due to recent severe cold fronts bringing freezing temperatures and snow to northern and mid-latitude areas of the Central and Mississippi Flyway. Combined with persistent drought to the north, conditions were favorable for waterfowl migration into Louisiana.

This morning 40,000 of them turned up missing. Reports indicate that the birds have abandoned their wintering grounds in Delaware and that snow geese are showing up in New York. It is unclear whether the birds that stopped here briefly and then left recently still are somewhere at this same latitude or if they have pushed north. It would be somewhat early for large numbers of snows to be north of us but the movements of these birds is hard to predict. As soon as conditions permit they will usually try to push north, but if they encounter much snow or ice they will again retreat southward.

Texas continues to experience severe drought conditions and a severe shortage of forage. The authorization of emergency CRP haying and grazing will provide forage for livestock and help producers in areas most severely impacted by these drought conditions reducing the potential need to liquidate herds.

This is the first time in recent history that the governor has declared a state of emergency because of fire conditions across the state. Any even though the conditions are not as severe as what we've seen up in north Texas, they are affecting us.

Conditions are dry, and rainfall is needed badly to hold ducks in these areas, as cold weather continues to push them south in large numbers.

These persistent and growing declines in the aquifer over a large area of the state are due mainly to current drought conditions and resulting increases in groundwater pumping for irrigation.

This is an unusual event in that it's lasted so long and that it's occurred at such a unique time, because people think of drought conditions in the summertime. It's just not intuitive for this time of year for there to be a severe drought condition for North Carolina. Pretty much all over the state, there has been drizzle conditions and temperatures right around freezing or below.

November was a month of massive extremes. We went from 70-degree temperatures in November to six days where it never got above freezing a couple weeks later.

Sunday was a test of toughness. In addition to the cold and rain, the wind chill created near freezing temperatures. In those conditions you are just glad that the entire crew returns to the dock in one piece.

The bulk of the snow we'll get today will happen in the morning. Snow levels will be dropping down with temperatures right around the freezing mark.

It has more potential for wintering birds. I consider it a migration/wintering area, where I consider the rest of the state migration areas. Mallards tend to winter as far north as they can find open water.

Oh my gosh, it's spring time. The temperatures are perfect; the snow is perfect. There are longer days, longer light. The warm temperatures aren't really going to affect the ski conditions. They might soften the snow, making it a little bit slower. But there's several feet of base up here right now. We prepare for warm temperatures.
