The Senate's agenda is quite light, ... There are no bills that have passed in the House of Commons. The majority of bills have already passed because we sat one month later into the summer. When you say the Senate is the Chamber of Sober Second Thought, well, you have to be thinking of something.

I find it just odd for all these economists and policy makers to be cheering for all this consumer spending when we're just digging ourselves into a hole. With all the obligations we have ahead, to retirees and to ourselves, we have all the reasons in the world for people to be saving more and be controlling their spending.

I think you need both, ... First of all, monetary policy doesn't work instantaneously either. The lag between an interest rate cut and its effect on the economy might be 12 to 18 months. Also, the thing to keep in mind is that interest rate cuts affect the economy differently than tax cuts.

Whether you have one bill that grows government at 10.9 percent or try to spread the spending over three different bills, this is still not consistent with the House's previous statement on the need for a true spending cap. We don't understand why some in the House now appear to not be willing to live within the cap they've already passed on themselves.

Weaker consumer confidence threatens to reverse the course of the recovery. That's why policy makers will be so cautious. They don't really have to worry about the economy's fundamentals, but they do have to worry about confidence.

The two appointments underscore the government's intention to do what is needed to meet the goals set out for financial reforms... and to better control its China policy. While they are seasoned executives at government firms, they are still more of policy executors rather than policy makers.
