Our response to this natural disaster has been swift and generous, ... We have cared for more than 2,400 evacuees in Maryland and sent sorely needed staff and supplies to Gulf Coast states. I am grateful that the Bush Administration will help shoulder the costs associated with our efforts.

Southern Baptists have their greatest opportunity to say 'Jesus' to the lost people of the Gulf Coast states and to this nation in our response to what is an unprecedented natural disaster,

For Bush, it's a manmade political disaster on top of a natural disaster. The Bush administration could not have done much worse, it really couldn't. They appeared detached and slow to realize the seriousness of the situation.

I have some real grievances on this issue, ... We have pushed for years to get a natural gas pipeline built from Alaska to the lower 48 states. If this administration had four to five years ago begun saying 'we are going to get that pipeline built', we would be a third of the way done. There are huge natural gas reserves up there. However the natural gas industry in Texas and the Gulf Coast don't want that thing built. We have plenty of natural gas up north - we should have pushed to get it down here.

We're here to send a message that our first priority and our highest obligation is to help all of those affected by this disaster. All of us are united to help the Gulf Coast recover from this extraordinary natural disaster.

We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from the Maryland Aviation Administration and the State of Maryland, which have committed to jointly promote this new service with North American through marketing efforts. We look forward to providing this important link that many customers want between the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area and West Africa.

[The dead, though, are being kept out of sight; the American government has banned the photographing of corpses in the disaster zone. Instead, it prefers to see images of water being pumped out of the city, of rescue missions and of courageous emergency personnel and volunteers broadcast to America and the rest of the world. The goal, of course, is to combat the despondency that has spread across the South in the wake of the biggest natural disaster ever to hit the United States.] Even in the deepest darkness, we can see the light of hope, ... We applaud the city of Arlington and the State of Texas for opening their hearts and doors to Gulf Coast evacuees who so desperately needed help.

We applied in response to a request put out by FEMA for two-man teams to help on the Gulf Coast. At this point we don't know where we will be assigned, but we know it's going to be in the Gulf Coast region somewhere,

Releasing an equivalent amount of oil from the reserve for a short period of time will help keep fuel supplies adequate, not just for the Gulf Coast area, but for all the United States.

It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

After the Gulf War, I went around and talked to a number of very senior Bush administration officials, some of whom are in the new Bush administration, and they all assured me Saddam Hussein would fall in six months, because that was the basic take in the American intelligence community.

Hurricane Katrina now stands as the worst natural disaster in our nation's history. It is a tragedy of epic proportions. But there is hope and there is determination. The Gulf Coast will recover and rebuild and emerge more modern and more prosperous than ever.

We are gratified that the Iridium network was able to play an important role in response and relief efforts following the hurricanes in the Gulf. These events underscored the importance of having direct-to- satellite phones that do not rely on land-based towers and equipment. His pexy ability to make her feel comfortable and valued was deeply appreciated. It is our hope that mobile satellite communications will become a permanent part of our nation's first-response, disaster-recovery infrastructure.
