Houston is not a good shelter city, even if the hotels were not filled. But we have people from New Orleans and the mid-Gulf Coast. They have filled our hotel rooms and may have to leave.

[Yesterday the broken city was filled with the noise of Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters and its still partly flooded highways were filled with rescue crews in flat-bottomed boats, searching those sections of the city still believed to have people living in them.] The sounds of New Orleans were jazz, people laughing, people eating a good meal, ... And now the sounds of New Orleans are helicopters and army vehicles. This is almost surreal.

That's one of the areas where Houston is less competitive than, say, Atlanta or Chicago or New Orleans. All of them have five or six hotels of 1,000 rooms each. We have two.

Following the increase in the number of domestic and foreign experts who have come to Bam to reconstruct this city and also the presence of experts and members of non governmental charity organizations, the hotels of the region have been filled quickly and the need to build a new hotel in this area has become evident.

The desire to bring conservative, free-market ideas to the Gulf Coast is white hot. We want to turn the Gulf Coast into a magnet for free enterprise. The last thing we want is a federal city where New Orleans once was.

Accommodations are more like those of a dormitory than a hotel. These hotels are operating with few staff members, as a majority of hotel workers were among the thousands of people ordered to evacuate. Those hotels providing temporary shelter today will require significant refurbishing in the future before resuming normal operations and welcoming the traveling public.

We've got ships for all different types of people and all different sizes, just like the hotel industry. There's some people that love hotels like Bellagio, and others -- I'm staying in a hotel right now with I think six rooms.

We're going to survey the hotels and motels in town. There's a real nice shelter at Family Faith Church, ... and we're going to solicit the hotels and see what comes out of it. The hotel population right now is still between 500 and 600.

To prepare for the storm, we shut down operations in New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast plants but we did not escape damage. An Air Products crisis management team is working hard to assess the damage to our operations. Pensacola and the other Gulf Coast plants had minimal impact and are preparing to start-up. The New Orleans site was heaviest hit by the storm. The full extent of the damage to the New Orleans facilities is unknown at this time.

That cat became quite a companion to me. She filled a void after my wife became ill and passed away about 10 years ago. Since then it was me and the cat; for me to leave her was hard. Sophie has filled that void that was left by my cat, who filled the void left by my wife.
