One of our main priorities over the past two months has been to find new positions for our team members. We have hosted two job fairs with over 25 employers participating in each. The average age of our members is about 79. They expected them (leaders) to be taking care of everything, and in reality, they were taking care of nothing.

SDUIH has been a major factor in assisting individuals in controlling their own destiny with proper health care, and achieving the quality of medical care they desire. The loss of SDUIH would have a detrimental impact on the community as well as the health care of the Native American community.

We target some of the people within the gay community who are indeed leaders, and then we train those individuals how to deliver prevention messages to other members of the gay community in bars and other social settings where men congregate.

In some ways, I think that the immigration issue is a crossroads for the community. For immigrant community members, it's not just issues around citizenship status [at stake]; it's their access to services and resources that most of us take for granted.

The focus of the Fund will be to help those individuals and families evacuated from the greater New Orleans area as they address immediate concerns related to housing, food, education, health care and basic survival necessities. Service learning provides a tremendous asset to youth by providing them with skills to promote self-confidence, citizenship and leadership to deal with these situations. Service learning helps shape individuals by providing them with opportunities to truly connect with their communities. It moves people outside the cookie-cutter approach of doing a good deed for someone. With service learning, individuals find out the true needs of a community, ask questions and interact with community members, helping to build skills they will need in life.
