en We are pleased with the consistently high level of academic achievement by our student-athletes. Penn State strongly encourages and endorses Academic Progress Reporting and other forms of protecting the interest of the student-athlete earning a meaningful education. We recognize that currently some institutions are slightly penalized for reporting at a higher standard, but we will not compromise that standard.

en I think we grew a lot as a team. The seniors learned a lot that they can take into their future careers. That's the great part of being a student athlete at Penn State. You learn so much more than just your sport. You learn life lessons.

en You must take care of the student-athlete. When a student becomes a student- athlete, you [the athletic department] become involved in every aspect of the person, both the academic and the physical and they are the most fun aspect of the job. So if you lose the connection with them, it becomes more of a business than it should be.

en His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

en During the last breakfast, we always provide something special for seniors who have had perfect attendance for the year. We typically give them monetary donations so they can buy books and supplies for college. Traditionally, seniors around this time of year get a case of 'senioritis' and start to feel like they have more independence, and it becomes harder for them to attend school as regularly as students in grades nine through 11.

en I will be counting heavily on the seniors to provide some leadership for this team. We have a great chance to be a special bunch this season.

en Where ever he's been, he's a winner. He's a wonderful young man with a lot of great experience. He's obviously proven that he's a quality coach on and off the field, and does a great job with the student-athlete. He makes baseball fun. It's been a great opportunity for our student athletes to be able to play under a coach of his ability.

en We actually hire the student before we send them to school. We pay them while they go to school, and we provide them with a lap-top computer with the company's software on it. And they will have a job waiting when they get out of school.

en This is an area where we know if we build school cultures and communities of learning and we provide resources to attract teachers and retain them - and it's not only money, but money is one of those elements - if we provide excellent principals and terrific leadership at schools, students will benefit.

en We provide them opportunities to interact with their fellow students in a variety of ways, whether it's athletics, academic competitions, student groups.

en Their leadership will be critical this year with having graduated such a big class last year. We brought in 11 rookies, so these kids will have to figure out how to play college lacrosse and learn what is expected of them as a college athlete. The seniors are tremendously important to us having success.
