John could be hitting.500 and he doesn't defend and doesn't run the bases, somebody hitting.300 who does both of those things is going to get the playing time. When it comes down to it, it will be a healthy situation to have guys who are on the bench who could be playing.

en They haven't gotten to that point where baseball is the most important thing in their lives. They got other things going on and as a coach, you have to step back and let them live their lives, let them do things that they have to do and at the same time trying to get them focused playing winning baseball.

en I think right now it's time to turn it up another notch. It's time to refuel the batteries and go for it. This month is real important to us. The first 15 days are real important for us. Hopefully we can go there and we believe we can do that and hopefully everybody on my team thinks the same way I think.

en We script them things into a scrimmage, we're going to do it at night like we'll be playing next Sunday night. Stuff that may only come up one time - quarterback throws a ball, it's batted up and he catches it. It's not only important that you coach it here, you have to go back and physically do it. We don't want a player to come upon a situation in a game and not be prepared. An extra point, they go into a spread, how you line up for that? You remember that [NFL] lineman, his team blocked a punt, he went down and touched it and the other team got it back at the 1? I would hope that would never happen to us because we go over it.

en To me, I just see that as shedding skin, to be honest. John [Taylor, former bassist] leaving was obviously very sad for us--particularly for me, because I'd grown up with him--but at the same time, it was time for us to turn into a butterfly again. Metamorphosis is very important to us--to move on, to do something different. But I think some things have stayed the same with us.

en It's important for me to play well every week, but it's probably a little more important here. I guess the sad thing is I'm playing good golf and I'm 2-under par, but it's just inexcusable. You cannot putt like I've been putting for three days. I'm tired of it, and I really hope I can get some things turned around on the greens.
