They're a very veteran team. They understand they've been in the last two games. A bounce here or there and the games could have been different. Knowing that they have got guys that have been around a long time, had guys that have won Cups and guys with a lot of leadership, that's why we expect their best game. Right now we're in a healthier state than we were last year at this time. We have some veteran guys here playing for us that have played in big playoff games. Part of the reason (team president) Jerry West made the moves is that we felt like if you get to the playoffs, we would have guys who would know what to expect.

We have a lot of guys who are motivated and want to win. I want to see guys fired up every game, every practice and determined we can get the job done. Knowing we can go into LSU and USC can come into our building and we're going to win those games, knowing we can compete with anybody. That just comes down to showing up. We thought we were ready to play (in big games last year), but we weren't.

This will help them. Everyone thinks it's four games in, but for all those guys, it's eight games in. Those young guys, in particular the rookies and second-year guys, not only is the season long for them, but they played more snaps in the preseason than most guys.

That's a Big Five game, and as long as we play in the Big Five, I'm never going to have one of these games let me make decisions about my team. These games are crazy. I'm not going to be down on my guys based on what happens in these games. We just have to survive these games.

Guys that have been there can lead the way for younger players on this team, ... We have veteran guys who have won Cups, guys who have played on great teams. They know what it takes and know what it takes to put pucks in the net. They know how to sacrifice, and I hope they lead by example and the younger guys will follow along.

We have veteran guys, guys who have been through the battles and know what it takes to pull out close games like this, ... It's not like we're going to panic when we get in those situations. We're not a young team anymore.

Obviously we've lost a bunch of tough games this year. Then we pretty much got blown out two days in a row. For our guys to bounce back, it says something about our guys. ... Guys picked it up.

Both teams have gone into every one of these games knowing they can win. Middle has some playmakers and their guys seem to make plays in that game, but our guys have made some, too. It's been a great game for both of us.

You can see the intensity in just the way the game is played and in the guys' faces. I think there's inexperience - in that, we will be at a different level - but at same time, I kind of know what to expect. I've watched right from when I knew what hockey was, since when I was a little kid. I grew up watching the league all the time, and the playoffs. There are games every night of the week, so I loved it. Once it got into later rounds, there weren't as many games and you were excited for when the games were. It was a lot of fun.

I've seen a lot of veteran guys who are leaders in this league play games just like that. Craig's been through this before. I have every confidence he'll bounce back, or we'll find the right person to do that.

We know that that's not acceptable down here. A three-loss season, hey, that's great for some teams. But guys do come back here and they're like, 'Nah, that didn't cut it last year, man.' They don't expect us to lose three games. I really think guys from other schools don't expect us to lose three games. It's really unheard of down here, especially in the last four or five years. We're looking forward to stopping that trend.

These guys are all leaders on our team, ... We have great veteran leadership and these guys exemplify that.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

Last night we challenged him in front of the whole team because I think in the last few games he didn't give us the games he should have. He responded and that's what I'm excited about. Some guys can't take getting called out in front of the team, but the guys that can use it as a motivational factor come out with games like he had tonight.
